Clay – it's food for my soul.
Hello, Manuela Ferstl here, a ceramic artist living in Mount Eliza and grateful to be in this beautiful part of the world, the Mornington Peninsula. My pottery journey started at my local high school, continuing through to completing my Bachelors in Arts Degree in ceramic design at Caulfield Institute of Technology.
For many years since, I have had the pleasure of teaching children and adults to embrace the joys of creating in clay.
My own journey in clay also evolved, exhibiting art works in many various art shows, local galleries, overseas and interstate, with the odd award received along the way.
Whilst majoring in the Raku firing process, I've explored other alternative surface textures. I love coarse & beautiful robust clays fired at a high temperature in my 4 burner LPG gas kiln.
I am most passionate about creating one-off sculptural forms which are either wheel-thrown, hand-built, or made from a combination of both. Sometimes almost appearing morphed into caricatures with personalities. I then enjoy bringing those forms to life by adding various combinations of glazes to the surfaces or playing around, altering glaze recipes to gain raw, rich earthy tones.
Clay has always been the core medium of choice whilst travelling through my creative journey. I feel I'm constantly being drawn into this adventure playground, moving along it's many pathways and directions it offers, and trails yet to explore. Clay makes my heart sing. It's especially a joy when others can feel a connection with a piece, hopefully giving them joy too, with a smile : )
