Susan Czermak was born on a small island off the coast of Scotland where her father worked as a marine biologist. There she had an extraordinary childhood, wandering safely all over the island, along the seashore by herself, surrounded by wildlife and wilderness. However, for most of her life she has lived in New Zealand and Australia, and has worked variously as a computer programmer, as a farmer, and as a teacher.
From early childhood she had an interest in design and artistic representation but those interests remained largely undeveloped until much later. She has been exploring the world and watercolour for the last twenty five years. She only paints subjects that she has seen as she tries to capture the mood and feelings that were evoked at the time. Since 2001 Susan has had regular solo exhibitions of her work mainly in France (where she lived in a village in SW France for 10 years).
Susan's style is realist and she hopes that sometimes the work may appear somewhat impressionist. She is most interested in light and its effect on a subject. Trying to capture the light and as a result the mood of a scene is to her more important than the details of the scene.
Susan’s art is in private and official collections in France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, UK, USA, New Zealand, Italy, Australia and Belgium.
Susan won the People's Choice Award at the 2022 PST Exhibition at the Mornington Studio.
